From Library Journal
Kallen, one of the first female boxing trainers to succeed
in this male-dominated sport, skillfully illustrates how
boxing techniques can be applied to achieving success in
one's personal and professional life. Each of the 12 "rounds," or
chapters, focuses on a boxing strategy that can help one
become more competitive and equipped to handle life's various
dilemmas. Chapter titles include "Get the Right People
in Your Corner" and "Watch Those Low Blows." The
book provides a great deal of insight into what it takes
to become a champion not only in boxing but in life. Unlike
personal development books that take a spiritual or introspective
approach to leading a successful life (e.g., Susan Taylor's
Lessons in Living, LJ 11/15/95, and Ayanla Vanzant's The
Value in the Valley, LJ 5/1/95), Kallen's work is written
in a light, refreshing tone that gives readers a play-by-play
description of what it takes to avoid or rebound from some
of life's hardest hits. Kallen uses anecdotes and her own
personal experiences to prove that winning a fight requires
skill, preparation, and a detailed plan, some of the same
ingredients needed for achieving personal success. Recommended
for popular psychology collections.?Demetria A. Harvin,
